I went to SalonApprentice.com, a site where hairstylists looking for models for practice and teaching purposes offer discount services. For now the site only covers New York City and Chicago but will probably expand in the future. There are similar programs at various salons throughout the nation, run a quick search on google to locate them. Many of these stylists are with prestigious salons so you can get a color job, haircut, or blow dry/style at a really reasonable price.
I ended up as a hair model for a stylist at the Eva Scrivo Salon, a high end salon. Eva Scrivo is a celebrity hair stylist and makeup artist. She's been featured multiple times on the Martha Stewart show and has two salons in the city. I went to meet up with my stylist Stephen at the 50 Bond St. location. Him and I along with a more senior stylist discussed what I wanted from the cut. Eva Scrivo herself was at the salon, she even came over a few times to give guidance and suggestions. The result? Pretty fantastic...

My layers were cleaned up drastically, the poofy-ness from the sides are gone, and volume was added to the crown area. My hair definitely looks more balanced now.
How much did this cost? $20 service fee and I gave my stylist a tip. Regular haircuts at this place runs from $90 for a junior stylist and goes over $200 for a master stylist. Eva herself is in the $350 range.
I'm super pleased with the result! I love that my hair no longer feels heavy but still looks full and not thinned out. The new layers are done really well, my old layers were in a terrible condition.
If you want to or is thinking about doing this I recommend that you sign up for a stylist refining his/her skills at a salon over a student stylist at a hair institute. You have a higher chance of getting a nicer haircut that way. Do your research on the salons you're considering before signing up.
Why is a good haircut important? aside from looking good it also lasts longer, better for yourself in the long run.
